What is abnormal vaginal bleeding?

A healthy menstrual cycle is between 24-38 days, and an average period lasts up to eight days. Your vaginal bleeding is abnormal if:

• Your menstrual cycles vary by more than 7-9 days each month
• Your period lasts longer than eight days
• Your period is so heavy you need to change your tampon or pad more than once every two hours
• You need to wear two sanitary products at the same time
• You bleed or spot between your periods
• You bleed after sex
• You bleed after menopause

Additionally, menstrual pain that is so severe that it keeps you from work, school, or other responsibilities isn’t normal.
